14:00 - 16:00, Tuesday 22nd January 2019

UPDATED: THIS EVENT WILL NOW TAKE PLACE IN COMMITTEE ROOM 18 IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. PLEASE ENTER VIA THE CROMWELL GREEN ENTRANCE.

Since 2015, development of new onshore wind projects in the UK has been at a stand-still. Strict planning policy conditions and heavily constrained access to government subsidy schemes have effectively removed the route-to-market for new projects. As we head into 2019 however, there are indications that government policy on onshore wind may be set to change. BEIS research has revealed that 76 per cent of the public support onshore wind development, whilst the Committee on Climate Change’s 2018 Progress Report to Parliament emphasised the important role that onshore wind could play as a low-cost, low-risk option for new electricity generation in the UK.

As part of a series that Green Alliance is organising under the EPSRC funded project ‘Energy Pioneers’, which supports early career women in the energy sector, the event seeks to bring together a range of perspectives on onshore wind and explore the conditions that need to be established for onshore wind to be sustainably deployed in the UK. It will look, in particular, at recent technology developments, the role of local communities in the decision-making process and the appropriate conditions for developers to establish a ‘licence to operate’.

The event aims to move the debate forward, from a simple ‘for or against’ exchange, towards a more sophisticated understanding of the ways in which developers and communities could collaborate on renewable energy projects, which are environmentally and socially appropriate for a local area.

Speakers will include:

  • Alan Brown MP- Shadow SNP Spokesperson on Energy
  • Cllr Bob Goodman- Cabinet Member for Development and Neighbourhoods, Bath and North East Somerset Council
  • Sarah James- Westmill Sustainable Energy Trust
  • Lindsay McQuade- CEO, Scottish Power Renewables
  • Sarah Merrick- CEO, Ripple Energy
  • Dan Stone- Project Manager, Centre for Sustainable Energy
  • Becky Willis- Associate, Green Alliance
  • Rebecca Windemer- Cardiff University
